In August 2015, the Japanese premium car manufacturer, Lexus, showed for the first time an updated version of the fourth generation of the Lexus GS 2017 premium sedan, which was released in Russia in the summer of 2016.

In comparison with its predecessor, the car received a more aggressive appearance, even richer equipment and a modernized technical component, which its predecessor could not boast, for which it was repeatedly criticized not only by automobile critics, but also by ordinary people.

Note that the Lexus GS 2017 release date in the world almost coincided with the presentation of updates to direct competitors in the person of Mercedes E-class and BMW 5-series, which are well "armed" to fight for the wallets of potential buyers.

Well, let's get down to business and try to figure out in more detail how the new GS differs from the pre-styling version and try to assess the chances of the Japanese in the struggle for the title of the best-selling premium car in its class.

Exterior Lexus GS 2017

The design of the novelty, which can be studied from the photo of the Lexus GS 2017 in a new body, is made in the style of the conceptual model Lexus LF-Gh, first shown in the spring of 2011 in New York.

The front part of the sedan received updated LED optics of complex shape with stylish free-standing L-shaped running lights, ideally complementing the new and extremely effective false radiator grille, which the company itself refers to as "Spindle grille". Note that the impressive part of the radiator grille is effectively inscribed in the massive front bumper, which attracts the eye with spectacular aerodynamic elements.

The car's profile received minimal changes - a new shape of the sills, as well as a modified design of alloy wheels. Slightly more changes are seen at the rear of the GS, with new, more eye-catching LED side lights, an updated bumper and an aggressive diffuser with two horizontal tailpipes.

The overall characteristics of the car are presented:

  • Length - 4880 mm;
  • Width - 1840 mm;
  • Height - 1455 mm;
  • Wheelbase sedan is 2850 mm.

Customers can choose from a wide range of body colors, as well as several designs of R18-19 alloy wheels.

Special attention should be paid to the special "charged version" of the Lexus GS F 2017, which differs from the civilian version in a different pattern of the false radiator grille, large air intakes located in the front bumper, as well as a "two-story" exhaust system and a large number of aerodynamic elements. Compared to the regular GS, the car not only looks more dynamic and aggressive, but also has larger dimensions: 4915 x 1845 x 1440 mm.

Interior of the new GS 2017

The interior design of the cabin impresses with its severity and excellent ergonomics. The interior uses exclusively premium materials that fully correspond to the status and class of the car. In front of the driver is a perfectly tailored three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a laconic instrument panel that is highly informative.

At the head of the massive center console is a large 12.3-inch screen of the multimedia complex, with the help of which the system is controlled, as well as information from the all-round camera and navigation is displayed. Below there are two horizontal air duct deflectors, between which a stylish analog clock flaunts. This is followed by the control unit for music, as well as the microclimate of the cabin, featuring a laconic design and an intuitive interface. In the "F" modification, the front panel is additionally decorated with virtual "instrumentation", which is complemented by a spectacular Alcantara and carbon fiber trim.

The front seats claim to be the best in the class, and also have a large number of electrical adjustments, a heating and ventilation system, and a "memory" effect. In the "charged" modification, the front seats are represented by sports "buckets", which are distinguished by pronounced lateral support, higher rigidity and the presence of integrated head restraints. The rear seats are designed for two passengers, but if necessary, a third rider can also be accommodated here, which will be pretty much interfered with by the massive central transmission tunnel. The second row riders have a comfortable center armrest, as well as separate air vents.

The luggage compartment volume is 530 liters, but the shape of the luggage compartment itself is far from ideal, which somewhat complicates the loading of heavy and bulky cargo. Practical users will appreciate the presence of a full-fledged spare wheel and a repair kit, located in the underfloor niche of the trunk.

2017 Lexus GS Specifications

Lexus GS 2017 in Russia is represented by an exclusively charged modification "F", equipped with a high-performance atmospheric V8 petrol engine with a volume of 5 liters and generating an impressive 477 "horses" and 530 Nm of torque. The main "chips" of this engine are the presence of an aluminum block, a combined fuel injection system, as well as a proprietary technology for varying gas distribution phases Dual VVT-iE with an electric drive.

All the power generated by the engine is directed through the 8-speed automatic transmission to the rear axle of the car, which boasts a variable thrust vector and an active gearbox. As a result, the sedan is able to develop a maximum 270 km / h, while acceleration from 0 to 100 takes some 4.6 seconds. Considering the impressive power, the average consumption of the updated Lexus GS in combined mode is about 11.5 liters.

In the European and domestic market, the car can be aggregated with V6 gasoline engines with a volume of 2 to 3.5 liters, generating 245-316 hp. and 350-380 Nm of rotational thrust. As standard, the car is offered with an automatic transmission and drive to the rear axle, but as an option, the user can install an advanced all-wheel drive system.

The updated fourth generation GS is based on a modernized platform familiar from the previous model, which actively uses modern high-strength steels and various aluminum components. The suspension of the sedan is represented by a double wishbone at the front and a multi-link at the rear.

As an option, the regular "GS" can be equipped with an electrically controlled chassis system with a choice of stiffness levels, and the "F" modification offers the installation of passive ZF Sachs shock absorbers.

The charged version of the sedan presented in Russia is offered with more efficient Brembo brakes, sharper steering and a sportier tuned suspension. Civilian versions of the car sport ventilated brakes and adaptive electric power steering, which has several modes of operation.

Lexus GS 2017 safety

Lexus would not be itself if it did not offer the updated GS a huge number of passive and active safety systems, which included:

  • Automatic door locking system when driving;
  • The proprietary complex of active safety Lexus safety System +;
  • VSC, ABS, TRC, RCTA and HAC systems;
  • Adaptive suspension;
  • 5 pairs of airbag;
  • Era Glonass system;
  • Double door locking system;
  • Rain and light sensors;
  • Headlight washer;
  • Cruise control (adaptive);
  • LED head and rear optics;
  • Branded alarm;
  • Three-point seat belts;
  • ISOFIX mounts and other "chips".

In terms of safety, the car is one of the leaders in the class, however, you don't expect anything else from the Japanese.

Options and price Lexus GS 2017

Conclusion on the new Lexus GS 2017

The updated Lexus GS (2017) is an extremely effective and technologically savvy car that has significantly changed in comparison with its predecessor. Unfortunately, in the Russian market, the car is presented exclusively in a charged version, so it will not be able to compete with direct competitors such as Mercedes E-class, BMW 5-series and Audi A6, presented in both civilian and “charged” versions.

But if we evaluate the exclusively "hot" modification, it turns out that in terms of equipment level, dynamics and spectacular appearance, it practically has no competitors among cars of a comparable price range and class, which makes the Lexus GS F an extremely profitable purchase.
