Lincoln is owned by Ford today and is considered a premium brand. Now representatives of the Lincoln company announced the stop of production of the legendary Lincoln Continental sedan. Instead of a sedan, they will now produce crossovers and SUVs, which are becoming more and more popular. According to preliminary data, production of the Lincoln Continental will be completed by the end of 2020. It is also known that before that time the MKZ model, which is considered the most compact sedan of the company, will leave the assembly line.

The result of this reduction will be the situation that by the beginning of 2021 there will be no sedans in Lincoln. Representatives of the company believe that the reason for such a tough decision is negative sales statistics, as well as an increase in interest in crossovers and SUVs. According to statistics, in 2019, only 1,845 copies of the Lincoln Continental were sold. On the other hand, the Lincoln Navigator SUV, which costs significantly more than the sedan, was sold with statistics three times more than the Continental.

With the discontinuation of the Lincoln sedan, the list of models will include the compact Corsair crossover, the mid-sized Nautilus crossover, and the massive Aviator and Navigator SUVs. The manufacturer does not exclude that in the future the ranks will be joined by a mid-size, all-electric crossover based on the Lincoln platform, although it was previously planned to take the Rivian R1S as the basis.

As the sales statistics for sedan cars show, Lincoln is not the only company where the growing popularity of crossovers forced other models to be removed from the production line and increased production of SUVs. A similar step has been taken at Ford, which means that by 2021 the company's lineup will consist of SUVs, pickups and crossovers. The only exception is the Ford Mustang, which remains unchanged in popularity. A similar statement sounded the same from Buick. The Mercedes-Benz SL and SLC have already been removed from the conveyor belt, the roadsters were followed by the Lexus GS and Acura RLX, which also dropped significantly in sales.
